My husband I met up with my colleague Sussi and her husband Steve at the magnificent Saxon Hotel in Johannesburg. One of the reasons for my trip was to celebrate Sussi’s 30th anniversary of Livingstone Safaris (more about that in a later episode). We have been working together since 1996 and Mushinda was Sussi’s first overseas client.
From Johannesburg we took a charter flight to Singita Pamushana in the low veld region of Zimbabwe. October and November are called the “suicide months” as the temperatures soar in anticipation of the annual rains. As we opened the plane doors we were hit by a 107-degree dry heat which did not abate. Pamushana is built on a rocky kopje (hilltop) overlooking a beautiful lake. The suites are arranged around the hilltop, amongst the boulders, and under the shade of huge, ancient trees. The setting is surreal.
Since my last visit, the property has undergone a complete refurbishment and the subtle African décor compliments the stone, wood, and thatch. The food was outstanding. The presentation for every meal was superb and was served on beautiful, varied crockery. What sets this camp apart is the genuine warmth and hospitality of the staff. At many other safari camps, the staff react to your requests, but at Pamushana they go one step further and always anticipate your needs.
On our first game drive that afternoon we were taken to the hide which is a hidden viewing spot overlooking a watering hole. This is one of the few places where the water is freshly pumped in from the lake. The constant animal traffic was unbelievable. That afternoon we saw 14 rhino’s (the park has a large population that are under constant protection of an army of rangers), not to mention all the other games.
Due to the heat we set out on the morning game drives at first light (5:00 am) and were back in camp by 8:00 am. For evening game drives we also set out once the temperatures started to drop. Despite the heat and lack of rain the game -viewing was amazing. We had a fabulous guide – Mike who was extremely knowledgeable and even though Sussi and I have done innumerable game drives we learned an enormous amount from him. Zimbabwe is my home and will always have a special place in my heart. Pamushana is the hidden gem of this country, and it remains at the top of my list of destinations that I want my clients to experience. I cannot wait to return, hopefully with all my family in tow.
